North

draw me a sheep...

I am putting together a new sim called North. It all started as an inspiration based on an ever-stronger desire to live away from the big city and move to rugged nature somewhere in the remote north. I created two other places a few years ago, one was Winter and the other Leka, both of which, looking back, I think I put together too quickly. So I knew I wanted to take my time with North and I have.

Inspired by the Shetland Islands in Scotland, where Scotland meets Scandinavia and the North Sea meets the Atlantic Ocean, I envision North as raw, serene and still. While I want it to be as true to the original islands as possible, I am not set on having it be a perfect replica. Open space, remote buildings, nature, and ocean are themes, not part of a perfectly constructed reproduction.

I learned going through this virtual sim creating process that there are both practical and emotional aspects involved. The tangible characteristics require some virtual world technical expertise, like, for instance, terraforming. The emotional aspects of sim building have to do with introspection and personality.

Those of you who put together sims already know what the practical initial tasks at hand are; terraforming, ground textures, layout. Then the adding of objects; rocks and stones, grass and flowers, buildings and objects, animals and animate objects. It is important to me that the sim is unique and different and this, truthfully, becomes the greatest challenge of all. I keep reminding myself that less is usually more. If I can avoid it, I don’t use popular objects that are immediately recognizable. Not always possible, but I try. I am also selective when it comes to the quality of the items I place on the sim. This involves digging deep into my inventory and also a lot of running around looking for things that might fit.

Taking time to create provides the opportunity for things to enfold. Just like when creating a painting, or when editing a virtual photograph for that matter, things look different on different days. There are days when my imagination seems to know no bounds and my creativity flourishes. These are the days when I excitedly add to the sim an incredibly detailed sewing room or a dilapidated urban skateboard park. Then there are other times when I am overwhelmed by the entire process and just want to throw in the towel. On those days I seem to just be aimlessly shuffling things from one place to another.

When putting together a sim and the practical and emotional are thoughtfully integrated, I think the end-result becomes a meaningful and inspiring sim ambience that in one way or another reflects the creators persona. I hope to get this project done soon and I look forward to sharing it with you then.

Leka Closing

Leka ClosingI wrote a blog post, Changes on Nordan om Jorden, about this a while ago and the time has now come; Leka on Nordan om Jorden will close to make room for a full-sim Berg by Nordan Art installation space. It has been so wonderful having Leka and I will miss it a great deal. Thanks to all of you who visited and thank you also for sharing your photographs in the Flickr group Nordan om Jorden. I will remove all objects on the sim on September 26 and the sim will be closed until we open again on October 4 with an installation by Giovanna Cerise. Sina Souza will show her work in the Berg by Nordan Art gallery in the sky for the same time period. Hope to see you then!

Changes on Nordan om Jorden

1

This Fall my place Leka on Nordan om Jorden will make place for a new Berg by Nordan Art installation space. I have loved everything about Leka; the process of putting it together, the updating and changing of things, the visitors (some of you have become good friends) and all the beautiful photographs taken and posted on the Nordan om Jorden Flickr group. It will not be easy to take it down and I will miss it a great deal. Once Leka has been removed, Nordan om Jorden will consist of two parts of the Berg by Nordan Art gallery only. The small gallery build remains as is above ground and we will continue showing photographs there. The ground will be used for large art installations starting October 2015. I will post updates here about all of this. For now, come on over and enjoy the next few months of Leka before it closes for good.

Dream A Little Dream

Dream A Little DreamI saw this very dreamy little daybed today at Vespertine for Fifty Linden Fridays and fell in love and had to get it. It comes in two different color coordinations, I chose the one with natural colors depicted above. It fits so perfectly underneath the large tree right on the beach at Leka. We already spent some time there today and it was incredibly relaxing. So, a highly recommended new mellow-spot on Leka, come and check it out!

Leka Makeover Complete

Tire SwingI spent much more time than anticipated giving Leka a makeover for the Spring/Summer seasons. While the sim pretty much looks the same and has not lost its overall atmosphere, I have also made some substantial changes. As already mentioned in my recent post New on Leka, two builds were removed and replaced by others and the beach was extended. The last few days, I also added a yellow flower field on one of the hills and attached to a tree there the familiar and lovely tire-swing from [we’re CLOSED]. I changed the space Rain completely and it ended up being a promenade of sorts. Finally, while I adore the Dirt Road by HPMD, I am also seeing it on many, many other sims and felt I needed a change on Leka; I replaced parts of the road with the Dirt Road by TUFF. Soo glad to be done, but also truly enjoyed putting it all together. Come take a look!

Finally Made the Switch!

laraIt is done, I finally switched to a mesh body. There was really never a doubt in my mind that I would end up with Lara by Maitreya. The body is super feminine and I am totally in love with the way it feels wearing it. And switching wasn’t at all as bad as I had initially dreaded. I am keeping my regular head and was able to the adjust the skin tone in the area where the neck meets the head pretty easily. The Maitreya HUD is straightforward to follow even for a technically challenged person like myself. I can wear most of my old mesh clothes, which I am also very happy about. A good thing all around!

New on Leka

House on the HillI’ve been wanting to make a few changes on Leka now that Spring is truly lurking around the corner and today I finally found the time. I removed the greenhouse on the hill and replaced it with the lovely Neva Chapel currently to be had at the Shiny Shabby event. Then I expanded the beach and placed right at the edge of the water one of my favorite houses by L2 Studio, The Writer’s Shed (I used it once before on Winter). Basically what happened then is that I went a little nuts planting hollyhocks! These flowers are a new release by the Heart Garden Center and nothing short of stunning. I haven’t done the inside of these two houses yet, but hope to get to it soon. Hope you will enjoy what I’ve done so far.
