A friend suggested I take a look at the new exhibit at the Lollygagger Art Centre. This is one of my favorite Second Life galleries for several reasons, one of them being that they without fail show great art. The current exhibit Bestiary D’Amour, by Kake Broek, is no exception. Each of his twenty images depicts a pair of animals that one would usually not think of being coupled as a pair. And each picture is framed with a garland of flowers, reminding me a bit of sweet cards I collected and exchanged as a child. The sweetness of these images is of course deceptive, as noted in the artist statement, [b]y manipulating the viewer to create confusion, he tries to create works in which the actual event still has to take place or just has ended; moments evocative of atmosphere and suspense that are not part of a narrative thread. The drama enfolds elsewhere while the build-up of tension is frozen to become the memory of an event that will never take place. Again and again, the artist leaves us orphaned with a mix of conflicting feelings and thoughts. Head over and take a look at this important exhibit, you will not regret it.
