Metamorphosis at Quarry Hill

Snapshot_004

There are several intriguing installations to be seen in Second Life© at the moment and one of them is Metamorphosis, located on the North West corner of the Quarry Hill sim and sponsored by the Quarry Hill School of Mines & Industries. This installation by Beq Janus offers a 3D interpretation of some of the works by M.C. Escher. Maurits Cornelis Escher (1898-1972), a graphic artists familiar to some of us, lived and worked in the Netherlands. While he is most known for his “impossible constructions,” like Reptiles, Methamorphosis (I, II and III) and Ascending and Descending, he also produced lithographs and woodcuts, designed tapestries and illustrated books.

The Metamorphosis installation was inspired by a part of Escher’s woodcut Metamorphosis II, but also includes themes like lizards, hexagon bees, birds and fish from his earlier paintings. There were understandable obstacles along the way creating this work in a virtual environment like Second Life and Beq Janus notes that [r]ecreating a two dimensional work in three dimensions has its challenges, and more so when the work is deliberately faking the third dimension, but it also gives you freedom to play with the unseen areas. I have tried to make the sim explorable, with tunnels and caves that lead you through the rocks, past stalactites and back round into the central square. I am sure that there are places I have not intended to make still waiting to be found. Head over and take a look at this quite majestic work.
